How Stick Pool Club achieved 40%+ cost savings with automated blue-green deployments on AWS
Stick Pool Club is an online multiplayer real-money gaming platform offering Live Poker, 3D Poker, 8 Ball Pool, 9 Ball Pool, and CallBreak to players across the country. With plans for aggressive growth and an upcoming fantasy games launch, the studio needed its critical game servers to support higher demand without compromising the player experience. It also needed a way to release new versions without taking live games offline, roll back quickly when required, and scale infrastructure based on load. Flentas migrated Stick Pool Club to AWS and built a DevOps pipeline around automated blue-green deployments. The engagement was followed by ongoing managed services covering monitoring, security, governance, and cost optimization.
Scaling a real-money gaming platform without disrupting live players
For a real-money gaming platform, infrastructure changes have to account for players who are actively using the application. Stick Pool Club needed to move its critical game servers to the cloud while improving scalability, release management, and cost efficiency.
Data transfer costs
Public cloud data transfer costs were an important consideration during the evaluation of cloud providers.
Zero-impact releases
New application versions needed to reach production without disrupting users, with a quick rollback option if a release introduced issues.
Dynamic scaling and monitoring
The platform needed to scale infrastructure based on demand while maintaining continuous monitoring to reduce the risk of user impact.
A scalable AWS architecture backed by automated DevOps
Flentas migrated the gaming application to AWS and then introduced automation around deployment, scaling, monitoring, and infrastructure management.
- 01
The AWS environment used Amazon EC2, Load Balancers, AWS Auto Scaling, and Amazon VPC to manage application workloads and separate environments. The application was also decoupled to make use of managed AWS services such as Amazon S3 and Redis.
- 02
For application releases, Flentas implemented a blue-green deployment strategy. Bitbucket was used for source control, while AWS CodeDeploy handled release management, Amazon S3 stored deployment artifacts, and AWS CodePipeline orchestrated the deployment process.
- 03
Automated alerts were added around blue-green deployments to provide visibility during releases. Flentas also provided 24/7 managed services covering infrastructure monitoring, security hardening, patch management, incident management, cloud governance, and cost optimization.
Faster releases, lower costs, and always-on support
The AWS migration and DevOps setup gave Stick Pool Club greater flexibility to scale its platform and release new versions without relying on large maintenance windows.
40%+ year-on-year cost savings
Strategic CDN planning through Amazon CloudFront, along with ongoing optimization, contributed to significant year-on-year infrastructure savings.
Faster releases and rollbacks
Blue-green deployments allowed new versions to be released with minimal impact to users and provided a faster rollback path when required.
Dynamic scaling
AWS Auto Scaling allowed EC2 capacity to adjust based on application load rather than relying on fixed capacity.
Better focus for the gaming team
With Flentas managing the AWS infrastructure, the Stick Pool Club team could focus more on building and expanding its gaming platform.
24/7 operational support
Managed Services provided continuous monitoring, patch management, security oversight, incident management, business continuity support, and cost optimization.
