How a leading Indian solar EPC player brought remote monitoring to 100+ plants with AWS IoT

The company, India's first private solar park developer, has more than 400 MW of commissioned solar projects across the country and manages over 100 solar plants and parks across multiple states. With plants spread across remote locations, operations and maintenance depended heavily on site-level SCADA systems. On-site engineers could monitor individual plants, but there was no centralized view across the fleet, and limited advanced analytics were available to management. Flentas built an IoT-based solution on AWS to extend visibility beyond individual plant sites. The solution enabled centralized remote monitoring, real-time power generation metrics, asset health tracking, and reporting across the company's solar fleet.

The Challenge

SCADA-only monitoring couldn't scale across 100+ remote plants

Operations and maintenance have a direct impact on power generation efficiency. Managing these activities across a geographically distributed fleet, however, becomes more difficult as the number of sites grows.

Site-bound monitoring

SCADA systems at individual plants were primarily used by on-site engineers, limiting centralized visibility.

Limited management visibility

The existing setup provided limited advanced analytics and insights for teams managing the broader fleet.

Remote, multi-state operations

Plants located across multiple states and remote areas made hands-on monitoring and O&M more difficult to sustain at scale.

The Approach

An AWS IoT stack built for edge data collection and fleet-wide visibility

Flentas built the solution around edge data collection, lightweight IoT protocols, and centralized analytics, allowing the company to extend its existing site infrastructure rather than relying solely on local monitoring.

    Edge data collection: Edge Gateway technology was deployed at each plant to collect real-time data from devices and systems. Data could also be cached on the hub during connectivity issues, allowing stream processing to continue when network connectivity was interrupted.

    Scalable asset monitoring: MQTT and other lightweight IoT protocols were used for asset health tracking, providing a communication layer designed to support large numbers of connected sensors.

    Real-time operational visibility: Power generation metrics were made available in real time, helping operators identify potential issues before they escalated.

    Centralized analytics: Data collected from the plants was used to provide analytics and reporting beyond the site-level SCADA view, giving management greater visibility into fleet-wide performance.
