How Gametion standardized mobile and backend releases with a managed DevOps pipeline

Gametion Technologies publishes multiple games for iOS and Android, with Ludo King, its multiplayer flagship, ranking as India's #1 gaming app on Android and the #1 game on the App Store India in 2020. As user traffic grew, the existing development and release process, built around multiple code versions, manual builds, and manual deployments became increasingly difficult to manage. Flentas redesigned Gametion's DevOps foundation, moved the workflow to AWS, automated the release pipeline, and now operates it as a managed service.

The Challenge

Scaling user traffic with a release process that couldn't keep up

As Ludo King's user base and backend requirements grew, the existing development and deployment setup created bottlenecks across the release lifecycle.

No central code repository

Mobile and backend application artefacts lacked a single source of truth, resulting in multiple code versions across developers.

Manual, error-prone releases

Builds and deployments were handled manually, making frequent backend releases slow and increasing the risk of human error.

Fleet-wide deployment complexity

Backend changes had to be deployed manually across a fleet of servers, making small fixes and new feature releases difficult to manage at scale.

No streamlined release process

Developers, testers, and operations teams lacked a unified, automated workflow for continuous application delivery.

The Approach

An automated DevOps foundation, built on AWS and managed continuously

Flentas deep-dived into the existing architecture and redesigned the DevOps process end to end, taking three months to implement the new foundation and transition the workflow to AWS.

  1. 01

Established AWS CodeCommit as a central repository for mobile and backend application artefacts, creating a single source of truth and eliminating version drift.

  2. 02

Automated the build and deployment process using AWS CodeBuild and AWS CodeDeploy, replacing manual builds and deployments across the backend server fleet.

  3. 03

Orchestrated the release process end to end with AWS CodePipeline, with AWS Lambda handling serverless automation within the pipeline on a pay-as-you-go model.

  4. 04

Took on ongoing management of the release pipeline and AWS environment, with Amazon CloudWatch providing continuous visibility into pipeline health and application performance.

Business Outcome

Faster releases, fewer errors, and a pipeline built to scale

99.99% reduction in user drop-offs

Following the introduction of a more reliable and automated release process.

Faster software release cycles

Enabling the team to release backend fixes and new features more frequently.

Automated deployments

Replacing manual server-by-server releases with repeatable, consistent deployment workflows.

Improved collaboration

Bringing developers, testers, and operations teams into one transparent, automated process.

Lower operational overhead

With serverless AWS DevOps services reducing infrastructure maintenance requirements.

Ongoing release reliability

With the DevOps pipeline continuously operated and monitored as a managed service.
