How a leading African fintech met Nigeria's data residency requirements without sacrificing payment performance

The company is a leading African fintech platform providing banking, payments, credit, and financial services to millions of users across Nigeria. As a regulated financial institution, it needed sensitive production data and processing to remain within the country while maintaining the low latency and availability required for real-time payments. Flentas deployed AWS Outposts inside the company's own data centre, bringing AWS infrastructure on-premises while retaining a familiar cloud operating model.

The Challenge

Meeting data residency requirements without compromising performance

Company’s growing payments platform relied on self-managed infrastructure, creating a difficult balance between regulatory requirements, operational complexity, and the low latency expected from a high-volume financial platform.

Data residency requirements

Sensitive production workloads needed to remain within Nigeria.

Complex infrastructure

Kubernetes applications, multiple database engines, MongoDB, and messaging systems required significant manual management.

High availability requirements

Migration had to protect payment performance and data integrity with minimal disruption.

Security and visibility gaps

Threat detection, compliance monitoring, audit logging, and infrastructure monitoring were fragmented.

The Approach

A production-grade AWS Outposts environment built inside the company’s data centre

Flentas moved critical workloads to AWS Outposts through a phased migration designed to preserve availability and validate each layer before production cutover.

  1. 01

Deployed a dedicated production VPC on AWS Outposts, connecting the on-premises network through Local Gateway and AWS services through Transit Gateway and Service Link.

  2. 02

Migrated Kubernetes workloads to an Amazon EKS Local Cluster running directly on Outposts hardware, using Helm for application deployment.

  3. 03

Migrated 13 RDS instances across five database engines, along with a MongoDB cluster, using AWS DMS for live, low-downtime data transfer.

  4. 04

Migrated critical EC2 workloads and five production S3 buckets, then strengthened security and monitoring with GuardDuty, Config, CloudTrail, CloudWatch, and SNS.

Business Outcome

Compliant, low-latency, secure, and ready to scale

Data residency compliance

With production workloads running inside Moniepoint's Nigerian data centre.

Ultra-low latency

By running critical compute and databases locally rather than in a distant AWS Region.

Stronger security and compliance

With continuous threat detection, configuration monitoring, and centralized audit logging.

Greater operational visibility

Replacing fragmented monitoring with centralized dashboards and real-time alerts.

Improved scalability and resilience

With AWS-native scaling and highly available infrastructure supporting continued transaction growth.

Near-zero migration downtime

With databases, EC2 workloads, and S3 data migrated and validated without interrupting payment flows.
