How 360VUZ built a reliable, scalable AWS architecture for a 1M+ user VR platform
360VUZ is a virtual reality mobile app delivering live and on-demand VR and video experiences for sporting events, concerts, and other exclusive events. The platform had grown to more than 1 million users and ranked #1 in the Entertainment category on the UAE App Store, ahead of Netflix and Shahid. That growth had exposed limitations in its original infrastructure. The platform relied on a monolithic, tightly coupled architecture without horizontal scalability, creating several single points of failure. Server capacity was also oversized relative to actual utilization, increasing cloud costs, while limited monitoring made it difficult to identify infrastructure and application issues before they caused downtime. Flentas rebuilt the AWS architecture from the ground up, separating application components, introducing Multi-AZ redundancy, adopting managed AWS services, and automating feature releases.
An architecture that couldn't scale or stay reliably available
360VUZ's rapid user growth had outpaced the architecture supporting the platform. The infrastructure needed to handle higher demand while reducing the operational and cost issues created by the existing setup.
Monolithic, tightly coupled design
The service layer was not designed for horizontal scalability or high availability, leaving the platform with multiple single points of failure.
Oversized infrastructure
Server capacity was not aligned with actual utilization, increasing cloud spend without providing corresponding value.
Limited monitoring
Minimal infrastructure and application monitoring meant issues could result in abrupt downtime rather than being identified and addressed proactively.
A ground-up rebuild for scalability, availability, and security
Flentas rebuilt the AWS environment from the ground up, focusing on separating failure points, scaling resources based on demand, and reducing the operational burden of managing the platform.
- 01
The monolithic service layer was decoupled into separate application tiers, with Multi-AZ redundancy introduced across each tier. This removed single points of failure and provided greater fault tolerance.
- 02
Flentas also moved selected workloads to AWS managed services, including Amazon RDS, Amazon ElastiCache, Amazon CloudFront, and AWS Media Services. This reduced the amount of infrastructure the team needed to manage directly.
- 03
To make releases more predictable, Flentas implemented an automated DevOps pipeline designed to release new features with minimal to zero user impact.
- 04
A centralized monitoring dashboard was also configured with alerts across infrastructure metrics, giving the team earlier visibility into potential issues.
Scalable infrastructure, better cost control, and safer releases
The rebuilt architecture gave 360VUZ a stronger foundation for supporting a growing VR user base without carrying the same infrastructure constraints.
Reliable and scalable architecture
Multi-AZ deployment and separated application tiers removed the single points of failure present in the previous environment.
Optimized cloud spend
Resources could scale based on workload, while load balancing distributed traffic across the application tiers.
Proactive monitoring
Infrastructure alerts helped identify potential issues before they developed into outages.
Lower database and cache overhead
Managed services such as RDS and ElastiCache reduced the operational effort involved in running and maintaining database and cache infrastructure.
Faster releases
The automated DevOps pipeline enabled more frequent feature releases while minimizing impact on users.
